NEWS ITEMS – August 2023.

OFFICIAL WEEKLY PRACTICE – In previous seasons, practice was both Tuesday and Thursday afternoons with Thursday being the club’s official (main) practice time. This season, Thursday afternoon will again be the clubs main practice time. The first official practice afternoon is Thursday the 7th of September. And from then, each Thursday afternoon (holidays excluded) until the season finishes.

START OF PENNANT NOT FAR AWAY – Saturday Pennant starts this year on the 7th of October. Tuesday Pennant hears the starting gun first – it starts on the 3rd of October……….. For details on practice matches, refer to the regular communications that come out from the President/Management Committee. If you think you were incorrectly rated last season, practice games are a way of demonstrating you actually can bowl well. Do make sure, however, that you have done sufficient practice prior to the practice games to allow a better rating. It’s not too late to get out your bowls, head down to our greens and see if those bowls are still as friendly towards you as they were last season…….. Because of our greens being available most of the time during the off-season, we usually get the “jump” on other clubs – let us try to do this again this season.

DIVISION 2 INDOOR BOWLS CHAMPIONS – Showing that they knew just when there was a need to hit peak form, our Divvy 2 indoor bowlers won the big trophy in last nights Grand Final (August the 8th). The team are champions after finishing 3rd on the ladder. I’m told they won 3 of their last 4 games by 1 shot – that is what we call bowling efficiency………. Congratulations to all members involved, on the night and over all of the season. Well done and thanks for flying the BMS flag so high.

WEDDING BELLS – JULIA AND MICK – Julia Holton and Mick Storey will celebrate their marriage with a ceremony at our club “greens” at 4 pm, Saturday the 2nd of September. With their guests, celebrations will continue after their marriage in the club’s Green Room. We wish Julia and Mick all the best for their future.

SELECTION COMMITTEES – 2023/24. – Our Selection Committees for the upcoming season are :–

Saturday Pennant – Judy Lindsay, Mick Hampson, Linda Johannsen, Neil Ellard, Adam McLean.

Tuesday Pennant – Lyn Bryce, Michelle Tait, Di Hampson.

NEW BOWLERS TO BMS ETC ???? – For the upcoming season, we welcome back some past bowlers and also welcome some new bowlers to our club. Past member Darren (Funky) Millar will be back as a BMS bowler. Also we welcome back Andrew (Ned) Bedggood – another bowler from the famous Bedggood stable. And it’s a real privilege to have back Life Member Ross Jones who has finished his “bowling related grand-fathering” duties in Melbourne……… Of even greater news is the two new members who will join us. Local identity David Missen will be a new BMS member. And Rob Daniels, the “lesser half” of the Rob and Annette (“Turtle”) partnership has nominated for full membership. We look forward to seeing both out on our greens…………. On the debit side, it’s likely David Schreenen will be playing bowls a lot closer to the Murray River than he has in previous seasons. And, of course, unfortunately, we no longer will have the benefit of the company of Dennis Storer……… I await further news re changes in personnel from the club Secretary or our selectors……….. Team nominations (the divisions we intend playing in) had to be in to the BDBD by the 1st August……. If you haven’t let our selection committees know your intentions, do so as soon as possible. In particular, if you intend playing Tuesday Pennant and didn’t do so last season, or if you played last season but intend taking a break, please make sure the Tuesday Selection Committee knows this as soon as possible.
